Dry Skin: How to Care for It (and Why Hard Water Makes It Worse)

Close-up of water droplets on a smooth surface

Dry skin is the type that feels tight after washing, looks a little dull or flaky, and never seems fully “quenched” no matter how much you apply. The fix isn’t just piling on cream — it’s understanding that dry skin needs both water and something to hold that water in, and that a few everyday things in India (hard water, air-conditioning, winter) quietly work against it. Here’s a routine that actually helps.

Why your skin is dry

Dry skin generally produces less sebum than other types, so it struggles to hold moisture and protect its barrier (CeraVe / AAD, 2026). That shows up as tightness, flaking, rough texture, dullness and sometimes itchiness. A few things make it more likely or worse: age (sebum drops from around the 40s), cold or low-humidity air, air-conditioning, over-washing, and harsh products (Healthline, 2026).

One important distinction: dry (a skin type, low oil) is different from dehydrated (a temporary state, low water) — though they often overlap. Dry skin needs both hydration and oil-based ingredients to seal it.

The dry-skin routine

Cleanse gently — and less. Use a mild, creamy or non-foaming cleanser, lukewarm (never hot) water, and don’t over-wash. If your skin squeaks or feels tight afterward, the cleanser is stripping it. Once at night and a splash of water in the morning is often enough.

Layer hydration, then seal it. This is the key move for dry skin:

  1. Humectants — ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin draw water into the skin. Apply to slightly damp skin. (Used wrong in dry air, hyaluronic acid can backfire — the how-to is in our hyaluronic acid guide.)
  2. Barrier lipids and emollients — a moisturiser with ceramides, plus emollients like squalane, seals that water in and rebuilds the barrier. This sealing step is what dry skin most often misses.

Support the barrier. Dry skin usually means a barrier that’s under-supported, so gentle, barrier-first care pays off — see our barrier repair guide. Ingredients like panthenol and niacinamide help.

Sunscreen daily. UV further degrades an already-vulnerable barrier. Choose a moisturising, broad-spectrum formula.

The India-specific culprits

Two everyday things make dry skin worse here, and both are addressable:

  • Hard water. Most Indian metros run mineral-heavy, alkaline tap water that leaves residue and shifts skin’s pH the wrong way — a daily source of tightness and dryness (full story in hard water and your barrier). A filtered final rinse and a pH-restoring routine help.
  • Air-conditioning and dry-season air. Both pull moisture from skin. Lean more on sealing moisturisers when you’re in AC or through a dry winter — the seasonal flexing we describe in why skincare has to be built for India.

What to avoid

Foaming or high-pH cleansers, alcohol-based toners, harsh exfoliating acids and scrubs, very hot water, and long gaps before moisturising (apply while skin is still slightly damp). Dry skin rewards gentleness and consistency far more than a big shelf of products.

Not sure dry is your type? The skin-type guide has a quick test — and if only your cheeks are dry while your T-zone is oily, you may be combination. If dryness is severe, cracking, or persists despite diligent moisturising, see a dermatologist — it can signal conditions like eczema that need proper treatment.

We’re building pH Matter’s hydration around holding moisture in Indian conditions — humectants used correctly, barrier support, no stripping. If you’d like a note when it’s ready, leave your email — no spam, just the science as it comes.

FAQ

How do I care for dry skin?

Cleanse gently with a mild, non-foaming cleanser and lukewarm water; apply humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) to damp skin; then seal with a ceramide-rich moisturiser; and wear sunscreen. Avoid hot water, harsh cleansers and over-exfoliating.

What’s the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?

Dry is a skin type with low oil production; dehydrated is a temporary lack of water that any type can have. Dry skin needs both water-binding humectants and oil-based ingredients to seal moisture in.

Why is my skin so dry in India despite moisturising?

Hard water, air-conditioning and dry-season air all pull moisture from skin or leave a drying residue. A filtered final rinse, gentler cleansing, and richer sealing moisturisers in AC or winter usually help.

What ingredients are best for dry skin?

Humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) to draw in water, plus ceramides, squalane and panthenol to seal it and rebuild the barrier. Apply humectants to damp skin and always follow with a moisturiser.

When should I see a dermatologist for dry skin?

If skin is cracking, very itchy, or stays dry despite consistent gentle care and moisturising — it can indicate conditions like eczema or dermatitis that need medical treatment.
